Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients:
- 1 cup (150 grams) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (100 grams) sugar
- 1/2 cup (50 grams) unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa powder or natural cocoa powder
- 2/3 cup (160 grams) milk (almond milk)
- 2 tablespoons (30 grams) canola oil or sunflower oil
Leavening and Seasoning:
- 1 teaspoon (4 grams) baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Glaze Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup (60 grams) powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons (12 grams) unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa powder or natural cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 – 2 tablespoons (15 – 30 grams) milk (almond milk)
Instructions
- Prepare the oven environment by setting the temperature to 340F (170C). Lightly coat the donut pan with a thin layer of oil or softened butter to prevent sticking. Sift together flour and cocoa powder into a mixing vessel. Incorporate sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon, then gently blend the dry ingredients. Create a well in the center and pour in milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk the mixture until just combined, allowing some small lumps to remain for a tender texture. Carefully spoon the batter into donut molds, filling each cavity approximately three-quarters full. Position the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes until donuts are set and springy to the touch.
- Remove the donuts from the oven and allow them to rest in the pan for 15 minutes. Gently transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. For the chocolate glaze, combine cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk in a small bowl. Whisk the ingredients, gradually adding milk to achieve a smooth, glossy consistency. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, using the back of a spoon to create an even coating. Alternatively, dust some donuts with a light sprinkle of powdered sugar for a different presentation.
Notes
- Customize the donuts by adjusting spices like adding a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom for extra warmth and complexity.
- Ensure donuts are completely cooled before glazing to prevent the chocolate from sliding off and maintain a smooth, even coating.
- Swap dairy milk with almond, oat, or coconut milk for a vegan-friendly version that doesn’t compromise on rich chocolate flavor.
- Store glazed donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate to extend shelf life by an additional day.
